Tất Tần Tật Cách Sử Dụng Của Cấu Trúc Not Only, But Also

Cấu trúc "Not only... But also" là một trong các cấu trúc nâng cao của chương trình tiểu học. Thường xuất hiện trong các đề thi HSG, và đặc biệt nếu các con có dự định thi IELTS, nhất định không được bỏ qua bài viết này nhé ^.^

1. Định nghĩa của cấu trúc Not only... But also 

Not only… But also không chỉ có nghĩa là Không những/ không chỉ … mà còn dùng để nối và nhấn mạnh hai từ hoặc cụm từ có cùng vị trí, tính chất.

Ví dụ: This car is not only beautiful but also very fast.

⇒ Chiếc xe này không chỉ đẹp mà còn rất nhanh.

Qua ví dụ trên, chúng ta có thể thấy cấu trúc Not only... but also còn dùng để nhấn mạnh tính chất của chiếc ô tô, vừa đẹp và nhanh nữa. 

2. Luật song hành trong cấu trúc Not only... but also

Parallelism – tạm dịch là Luật song hành có nghĩa là những phần tương tự trong một câu phải có cùng một cấu trúc

• Ví dụ: Nếu đứng sau Not only là 1 động từ, thì đứng sau But also cũng phải là động từ. Còn nếu theo sau not only là danh từ, thì sau but also cũng là danh từ.
• Lưu ý: Khi dùng cấu trúc song hành, cần thận trọng không lược bỏ những từ cần thiết như: giới từ, đại từ liên hệ…

3. Vị trí của cấu trúc Not only... but also

3.1. Not only... but also đứng giữa câu

➤ Nhấn mạnh danh từ

S + V + not only + N + but also + N

 

• She is not only a novelist but also a poet. 
• He is not only a statesman but also a man of the people. 
• Shakespeare was not only a writer but also an actor.

 

➤ Nhấn mạnh động từ

S + not only + V + but also + V

 

• He not only studies hard but also works well. 
• She not only plays well but also writes music. 
• She not only entered the competition but also won it! 
• He not only read the book but also remembered what he read. 
• He not only writes his own plays but also acts in them. 

 

➤ Nhấn mạnh tính từ

S + V + not only + Adj + but also + Adj

 

• He is not only arrogant but also selfish. 
• Tom is not only rich but also famous. 
• She was not only extremely intelligent but also very practical. 

 

➤ Nhấn mạnh trạng từ

S + V + not only + Adv + but also + Adv

 

• John works not only quickly but also efficiently.
• Thomas writes not only correctly but also neatly. 
• He worked not only hard but also carefully. 

 

➤ Nhấn mạnh cụm giới từ

S + V + not only + Prep + but also + Prep

 

Ví dụ: Doing exercise is not only good for your physical health but also for mental health.

⟹ Tập thể dục không những tốt cho tình trạng thể chất mà còn tốt cho tinh thần.

3.2. Not only... but also đứng đầu câu đảo ngữ

Not only + trợ động từ/động từ to be + Chủ ngữ + động từ … but also ….

Ví dụ: 

➤ Noun:

• Not only does he speak English but he also speaks French.
• Not only does she speak Spanish but she also knows how to type.
• Not only you but also I am planning to go.
• Not only do the nurses want a pay increase but they also want reduced hours as well
• Not only is he handsome but (he is) also intelligent.

• Not only is the return address on the e-mail almost certainly fraudulent but also responding to spam creates more traffic.
• Not only will that skill help your resume but also will make you familiar with on-line job recruiting.
• Not only was it raining all day at the wedding but also the band was late.
• Not only will they paint the outside of the house but also the inside.
• When there is no auxiliary verb or main verb be, we use do, does, did:

4. Lưu ý về vị trí của từ Also

➤  Câu có động từ thường: từ Also sẽ đứng trước động từ thường

• … but I also love pasta.
• … but he also does exercise.

➤Câu có động từ TO BE: từ ALSO sẽ đứng sau động từ TO BE

• … but I am also nervous.
• … but she is also excellent.

➤ Câu có trợ động từ và động từ thường: từ ALSO sẽ đứng ở giữa

• … but he has also played tennis.
• … but she had also worked hard.
