Nếu thường xuyên xem phim, đọc sách báo hay giao tiếp tiếng Anh với người bản ngữ thì ta sẽ thấy họ rất hay sử dụng Cụm động từ (Phrasal Verb) để diễn đạt thay vì chỉ sử dụng duy nhất một động từ. Và chúng ta cũng thường xuyên bắt gặp chúng trong các bài thi tiếng Anh. 1. ĐỊNH NGHĨA VỀ CỤM ĐỘNG TỪ (PHRASAL VERBS)

Cụm động từ (Phrasal verbs) là sự kết hợp giữa một động từ và một từ nhỏ (particle). Từ nhỏ, particle(s), này có thể là một trạng từ (adverb), hay là một giới từ (preposition), hoặc là cả hai:

VD: The rich man gave away most of his fortune.

( Người đàn ông giàu có ấy đã tặng hầu hết tài sản của ông ta cho người nghèo.)

2. CÁCH SỬ DỤNG CỤM ĐỘNG TỪ

Vai trò của Cụm Động Từ:

• Ngoại động từ (transitive): theo sau là một danh từ hoặc là một đại danh từ với chức năng là túc từ (object) của động từ.
• Nội động từ (intransitive): không có túc từ theo sau.

A. NỘI ĐỘNG TỪ: Intransitive phrasal verbs

Không có túc từ – động từ cùng particle (thường là trạng từ- adverb) luôn đi sát nhau:

Vd:

• The magazine Time comes out once a week

       (Báo Time được phát hành mỗi tuần một lần)

• Our car broke down and had to be towed to a garage

( Xe của chúng tôi bị hư và phải kéo về chỗ sửa)

Cũng như các nội động từ thường, không có túc từ đi theo, loại phrasal verb này không dùng ở thể thụ động (passive) nên bạn không nghe dân bản xứ nói

“Our car was broken down…”, “ The magazine Time is come out…”

Một số intransitive phrasal verbs thông dụng: break down, come back, fall through, get by, get up, go on, grow up, look out, show up, shut up, sit down, stand up, stay on, take o, turn up, watch out…

B. NGOẠI ĐỘNG TỪ: Transitive phrasal verbs

Được chia làm HAI NHÓM, tùy theo vị trí của túc từ:

NHÓM 1: có thể ở giữa động từ và ‘particle’ hoặc đi sau ‘particle’:

VD:

• I took my shoes o./ I took o my shoes.

       ( Tôi cởi giầy ra.)

• He admitted he’d made up the whole thing./ He admitted he’d made the whole thing up.

       ( Anh ta thú nhận rằng đã bịa ra mọi chuyện.)

NHÓM 2: Nhưng khi túc từ là một đại danh từ (những chữ như this, that, it, them,me,her và him thì đại danh từ này sẽ đứng ở giữa động từ và ‘particle’:

VD:

• I took them o. (NOT I took o them)
• He admitted he’d made it up. (NOT He admitted he’d made up it)

NGOẠI LỆ

Có nhiều phrasal verbs vừa có thể là transitive hoặc intransitive, ngữ cảnh cho ta biết chức năng cùng với nghĩa của chúng.

VD:

• The plane took o at seven o’clock.

       (Máy bay cất cánh lúc 7 giờ.)

• He took o his hat and bowed politely as the teacher passed.

       (Nó cất mũ cúi mình chào lễ phép khi thầy đi ngang.)

• I am taking this Friday o to get something done around the house.

       ( Tôi sẽ nghỉ thứ sáu để làm việc nhà)

• He’s been taken o the medication.

      (Nó vừa được ngừng uống thuốc.)

• Son takes o his English teacher perfectly.

       ( Sơn bắt chước ông thầy người Anh rất tài.)

Nội cụm động từ: 

VERB	MEANING	EXAMPLE
break down	hỏng,	That old Jeep had a tendency to break down just when I needed it the most.
catch on	phổ biến, thịnh hành	Popular songs seem to catch on in California first and then spread eastward.
come back	trở về, trở lại	Father promised that we would never come back to this horrible place.
come in	vào, bước vào	They tried to come in through the back door, but it was locked.
come to	hồi tỉnh	He was hit on the head very hard, but after several minutes, he started to come to again.
come over	đến thăm	The children promised to come over, ut they never do.
drop by	ghẫ thăm	We used to just drop by, but they were never home, so we stopped doing that.
eat out	ăn nhà hàng	When we visited Paris, we loved eating out in the sidewalk cafes.
get by	xoay sở (tài chính)	Uncle Heine didn't have much money, but he always seemed to get by without borrowing money from relatives.
get up	dậy, trở dậy	Grandmother tried to get up, but the couch was too low, and she couldn't make it on her own.
go back	quay về	It's hard to imagine that we will ever go back to Lithuania.
go on	continue	He would finish one Dickens novel and then just go on to the next.
go on (2)	happen	The cops heard all the noise and stopped to see what wasgoing on.
grow up	trưởng thành, lớn lên	Charles grew up to be a lot like his father.
keep away	remain at a distance	The judge warned the stalker to keep away from his victim's home.
keep on (with gerunr)	with the same	He tried to keep on singing long after his voice was ruined.
pass out	ngất, bất tỉnh	He had drunk too much; he passed out on the sidewalk outside the bar.
show off	demonstrate haughtily	Whenever he sat down at the piano, we knew he was going to show off.
show up	arrive	Day after day, Efrain showed up for class twenty minutes late.
wake up	tỉnh giấc	I woke up then the rooster crowed.
