My sister and I have always been very close and early last year my sister had her 19th birthday. She had been dabbling with the bakery for a couple of months, but the tools she was working with were not the best, nobody in my home ever really baked, we preferred to just buy our baked goods ready-to-eat.
But she would make do with what she had and would never complain but I could see that she was not pleased with what she had and would have to improvise a lot when testing new recipes out. I saw that she had potential though, so I thought for her birthday I would get her a professional mixer she had been eyeing for a while, a well-designed purple gadget with an abundance of attachments and also throw in a full set of kitchen utensils.
I was very excited for her to see it as I was sure she would be overjoyed at all the new recipes she could try to make with it. I won’t deny that I would reap the rewards from the gift in the end as well. Her eyes went wide as she opened it and ended up crying over it, she was astounded and excited.
I think I made the right choice with the gift as, fast forward a year later, she is now confident enough with her skills to open a small bakery service from home. I’m delighted that my gift has made such a big impact to her life and can’t wait to see where this takes her.

There are a number of events that require a gift exchange in my country. Off the top of my head, I can think of birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, housewarmings and holidays like Christmas or Easter. It is kind of expected for major holidays for there to be some sort of exchange, which usually does not require the gift to be lavish. I also tend to travel a lot, so I always try to bring back souvenirs for family and friends so I can share in some small way my experience.

Some gifts can be small and significant while others can be extravagant and flashy, it all depends on what the occasion is. For birthdays, for example, people tend to try and give the person something that is meaningful to them or reminds them of a shared experience together. A lovely bouquet of flowers or chocolates are very common gifts for Valentine’s day or anniversaries, but the gifts can also be more expensive such as jewelry or weekend getaways.

I’ve never really thought about it, but I think the style of gifts does not change much, we are creatures of habit after all and our gifts still fall into neat categories, what has changed is the variety of things that we can buy and how we purchase them. Globalization has given us products from more places around the world to enjoy and online shopping has made it a lot easier for us to acquire them without the hassle of going to shops.

I think it’s a little impersonal, however I can see the benefits to it and it is becoming more and more popular these days since people are struggling with finances or making their own nest egg. It’s a down-to-earth choice since then the receiver can put that money to use on pressing matters or get something that they will really enjoy and it’s a safe choice for events like birthdays or weddings.

I would say that it is not only a good idea, but also expected up to a point. There is protocol to these kinds of gifts though, as depending on the nature of the relationship it could be misconstrued as sucking up to someone or even worse, a bribe, so it’s important to make sure to pick the right gift and that it seen as a sign of respect or camaraderie.
